Work Smart Not Hard while you are at the office
The old maxim used to be work harder. Nowadays it’s work smarter. And the digital age affords us perfect ways to enlist our cleverness. Scroll down and see how. We know you’re smart enough to do that.
Why working hard is not smart
How do you feel after you’ve been staring at your screen for two hours straight? We rest our case. Turns out you have a well of psychological energy from which your genius flows. If you don’t throw down a sandwich or a blast of fresh air and exercise now and then, it dries up.
Time out
We used to tout phrases like “burnout” and “yuppie flu” but nowadays, thanks to science, we’ve got it down to a fine art: We know that you need to take breaks every day, and we know exactly how long and when. Let’s cut to the chase. It’s 17-minute breaks for every 52 minutes of work. Ready to buy the app?
Rise up, Lazarus
What do you do as you get up off your posterior on a work break? Yes, you might give your boss’s PA an admiring glance (though that might not be very smart.) No, you shouldn’t check your e-mail or tweet. You are bigger than that. Take a walk. Alternatively, you could read a book. We know it’s old-fashioned. It may even feel weird. Try it. Or pretend it’s 1993 and talk to each other. No, not about work!
Sky’s the limit
Here are a few other tips for replenishing that well: Crack something tough first. Or if you’re not in the mood, finish the simple, easy tasks to begin with so you feel good. Do something that makes you happy, even if you should be working. You’ll work better later. And lastly, accept that you’re human. You get tired, hungry and sore. Ask for help. Give up occasionally. It’s good for productivity!
