Getting a blog off the ground
When it comes to online marketing, one of the easiest ways to rank within Google is to have continuously updating, relevant content on your site – a blog will help you achieve just that. Of course just installing a blog and then sitting back will also not help, the original content needs to be coming from somewhere and an RSS Feed is not enough for Google.
Whether you are writing blog posts for your blog or having them written for you, it is important to keep these points in mind before any content gets published.
I’ve limited this list to what I think are the most important points to remember:
Keep it Consistent
This doesn’t necessarily mean EVERY day, unless of course your business is blogging… Posting 2 -3 times a week is not only manageable but also doesn’t bombard readers with content they don’t get around to reading. If you have the resources to blog every day then go ahead, just remember to keep it on topic.
Keep it short
Around 400 words is the average length of a good blog post. Any more than that and readers get bored or stop concentrating, however this really depends on what you are communicating and your target market. In some cases a longer blog post will be better for you than a short one. If you’re unsure how long your web content should be, then check this post which should help you decide.
Focus!
Having focus for a blog makes it a lot easier to write for and targets a specific readership. If you have a blog which discusses online marketing and you start writing about shopping or travel, your readership will dilute and the blog will become less credible, not only in the eyes of your readers but in the eyes of Google too.
Structure
People mainly scan when they read online content so make sure you make allowances for the different type of reader, by using things like bullet points and shorter sentences.
Images
Images add a little life to your writing. Free images are available on platforms like Flickr under the Creative Commons license.
Linking
I like linking to a relevant outside source in almost all my blog posts. Wikipedia is a great source to link to and so is YouTube. Linking to other relevant blog posts and pages within your own site is also acceptable although I don’t do it for every post.
