Is Facebook Still Free?

Internet marketing professionals and content writers often use Facebook as a platform for marketing and communications. This internationally popular website with millions of users is one of the most-visited on the internet, from the occasional user who logs in a few times a week to the Facebook addicts who just can’t get enough of social media.

Recently, a number of blogs and websites have posted a story claiming that Facebook is about to start charging users for access. According to these claims, the website will be introducing three tiers of membership with different functionality available to each tier. Many Facebook users may be shocked or disappointed at these claims, and the website has gone to great lengths to deny them.

“Facebook will always be free”

These words, part of Facebook’s media statement following the claims which it refers to as a rumour, sum up the website’s position. There are no plans to charge Facebook users for access, and users around the world can breathe a sigh of relief.

Is there really such a thing as a free website?

According to some internet marketing experts, there is no such thing as a free website. While users may not pay to access certain websites, this fact is part of their business model.

In the case of free sites, the customer is probably not the user but the companies that pay to advertise on the website. It is estimated that Facebook will turn over close to $4.8 Billion this year, highlighting the reason why the site doesn’t charge users for access: it doesn’t have to.

According to other commentators, the price users pay to free websites is a lack of privacy. While many websites would argue that they do their best to ensure user privacy, some web users may have reservations about sharing private information on the internet or having their browsing habits monitored.

Facebook fans will be relieved to hear that their favourite site is still free, and internet marketing professionals who use the power of Facebook to reach a broad range of clients will also stand to benefit.
