Generating Search Engine Friendly Copy
I guess the first question should be “What is Search Engine Friendly Copy?” When someone types into a search engine (like Google, Yahoo etc), they will expect to find sites which are relevant to their search. You are ranked according to a number of things, the most basic being:
- How many links you have to your site from other relevant sites (I really do mean relevant, you will be penalized if the link is not relevant), and
- The relevance of your content (these are the words on your site).
You are more likely to have links if you have a lot of content offering opportunities for other sites to link to you – so I’m going to speak about the content on your site.
In the olden days (about 5 years ago) just having relevant keywords in your Meta data, or the information which you can’t see but which Google can, was enough to have you ranked, BUT with dodgy web developers and online marketers abusing the system, the search engines had to become clever to make sure they delivered the correct information for what was being searched for.
So now it is imperative that you have your main keywords (which usually include your services and the area you operate out of if you want to be specific) appearing in your content.
If, for example, you are a plumber and work in a specific area – the main keywords you would have on your site would include things like “plumber Cape Town” or “blocked drains Cape Town”. These words would have to appear throughout the copy of your website for Google to see that it relates to a plumber who services the Cape Town region.
This doesn’t mean you have to have a sprawling website with pages and pages of content, you can have:
- A short, clean website with pages of 300-400 words which include your keywords, or
- A blog – this is probably one of the easiest and best ways to ensure you have relevant content on your site which also allows other sites the opportunity to link to you.
Optimising your site for search engines can become very technical however it doesn’t have to be if you concentrate on having well written content on your site which reflects your keywords.
